11 Aug Top 5 Tips to Make Sure You’re Picture Ready
Believe it or not, there are things you should do to get the most out of your photo shoot. Here are my top 5 tips to make sure you are picture ready:
5. Read the contract
Know what you’re signing. Understand the expectations the photographer has of you and what you should expect from your photographer. For this one, I would like to point out a little nugget of information: if you screen shot/copy paste a proof of an image and share it on social media or have it printed and tried to crop out the PROOF watermark before you purchase that image, you have just stollen from your photographer 🙁 . It is not until you actually purchase your image do you have the exclusive rights to that image. Each photographer may have their own expectations, so please have this conversation up front to avoid that awkward phone call asking you to cease and decist. It’s also really rude…and nobody likes a rude dude 😉
Ladies & Gents – Your hair MUST be done, period. However you wear it, straight, curly, natural, relaxed, weave, long, short, locs, braided…mustache, beard, or clean shaven for the fellas, whatever your style, just make sure it has been done if not the day of, then the day before. If you don’t like your hair, you won’t like the image.
3. Make Up
Ladies, I know the majority of us think that we can pass and do this ourselves and save a few dollars, but I beg to differ. If you are going all out and having a professional photo shoot/portrait session, then by all means do it right 100%. Make-up artists (MUA) are your friends. Here is a tip, unless you’re doing a high fashion shoot, lean more towards a “beauty” look. Tell your MUA go easy on the contouring, easy on the “glow/dewy” look.
All day everyday solids win over prints! They just translate better in a photograph. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but if you’re not sure go solid. Bring options even if your session only allows for one look, it is always good to have a back-up just in case.
After you’ve nailed all of the above, you’ve read your contract, just left the salon and hair is popped, make up artist did her/his thang with your face (what is the new saying “beat your face”…?), and outfit(s) are to die for – if you show up to the shoot stressed out and tense you could risk blowing the entire shoot! Now, I’m not saying this will absolutely ruin it, because if you have the right photographer they will be skilled enough to either get you relaxed OR direct you so well you fake it ’til you make it. But what I am saying is that you will be better positioned to fully maximize the shoot if you’re relaxed, take a few moments to breathe before you start, and TRUST your photographer’s direction.
